Identify the active connection
Apple describes Low Data Mode separately for cellular and Wi-Fi. It restricts background network use and can pause automatic updates and backups or reduce streaming quality. A Wi-Fi setting does not establish the cellular setting; on Dual SIM verify the active data line. It does not prove a disconnected VPN.
Run a short task-specific comparison
- Identify whether photos, backups or app updates paused and record the stated reason. Avoid several large tasks at once.
- For Wi-Fi inspect the current network information in Settings. For cellular inspect data options or Data Mode for the active line; menus vary by device and carrier.
- If your allowance and charges permit, temporarily disable Low Data Mode for that connection while keeping the VPN route fixed.
- Reopen the target app and manually retry one small task using its official controls. Background work may not all resume immediately.
- Restore the data-saving setting you need. Report network type, original setting and result without photos or account screenshots.
If the task remains paused
Check storage, power, app-specific sync conditions and service status next. One recovery does not prove the original route failed. Do not sign out of your Apple Account or reset networking for this symptom alone. No bypass of background restrictions or test of your backups is claimed.
