Separate transfer speed from responsiveness
Bandwidth describes how much data can be transferred over time; latency describes how long delivery takes. Video buffering and delayed game responses are different symptoms. For games, watch consistency as well as delay. A fast download does not rule out jitter or packet loss during play.
Start with a direct-connection baseline
- Disconnect the VPN and check the same device against familiar services.
- If the direct connection also fails, examine Wi-Fi reception, mobile data or the router first.
- Pause obvious competing transfers, such as large downloads or cloud sync, then compare again.
- Reconnect and repeat against the same destination without also changing the device or network.
Compare routes under similar conditions
Record the selected route and time before trying another available route. Geographic distance is not the only factor: load, network interconnection and destination location also matter. Repeat under similar conditions, noting page loading, video continuity and in-game latency rather than a single speed score.
If only one destination has a problem
When most services work and one fails, check that destination’s status, account conditions and error message separately. Do not assume the entire VPN has failed. Record the destination, time and message, then try another route to help distinguish a service issue from a connection issue.
Create a report that can be reproduced
Include device model, system version, network type, route name, time and exact error. State whether direct access works and whether another route was tested. Avoid passwords or full payment details. Reproducible conditions are more informative than a screenshot containing only a low speed number.
