VPN and Incognito: Two Different Privacy Layers

Incognito creates a separate session and clears its session data after all private windows close. Downloads and bookmarks can remain. It does not automatically hide activity from websites or network administrators and does not replace a VPN.

Incognito creates a separate session and clears its session data after all private windows close. Downloads and bookmarks can remain. It does not automatically hide activity from websites or network administrators and does not replace a VPN.

Identify what you want to protect

For shared-device history, close all private windows and check retained downloads. For network egress, connect the VPN and inspect the public IP separately. A signed-in site still identifies your account; neither tool establishes complete anonymity.

Use a separate session for comparison

Compare normal and private windows on the same network and route. If only the normal window fails, record differences in sign-in, site data and extensions. Cookie rules can also change behavior in Incognito. Start with the affected site instead of deleting all browsing data.
