Identify the address being observed
Apple describes private Wi-Fi addresses as different MAC addresses that reduce cross-network association. They are distinct from public IPv4/IPv6. Newer versions may offer Off, Fixed and Rotating; Fixed does not mean a static public IP.
Compare while preserving privacy settings
- Record whether failure occurs when joining Wi-Fi, accessing local resources or viewing a website’s location.
- Inspect Private Wi-Fi Address under the current network’s information button and note the mode before changing it.
- If Wi-Fi works but exit IP differs, keep this setting and check the public address in one browser after connecting the selected VPN; note time and IP family.
- If joining or network resources fail, check software updates and network requirements; ask IT about device registration on managed networks rather than bypassing admission.
- Only when a specific compatibility test requires it, make one temporary per-network change and preserve the original value for restoration.
Keep privacy layers distinct
Private Wi-Fi Address does not guarantee a hidden public IP, and a different VPN exit does not establish a changed MAC. No fixed-exit service is promised; verify actual paths separately.
