Identify the scope
Microsoft recommends checking the selected output and device/app mute controls. After connecting HDMI or USB equipment, the selected output may differ from the headphones being worn. Page loading alone does not validate audio playback.
Compare while keeping the network unchanged
- Keep network and VPN route unchanged and play a known-good local audio file at a low initial volume.
- If local playback is silent, inspect System, Sound, Output in Windows; choose the actual speakers/headphones and check cables, power and mute.
- If only browser playback is silent, inspect player volume and that app in Volume mixer rather than only the master volume.
- Temporarily disconnect an unused output as one comparison; do not remove drivers or reset networking for this test.
- If sound returns but buffering remains, record the buffering period and network state separately.
When to investigate the network
If local audio and output controls work but streaming buffers or reports connection errors, investigate network and service state next. This covers playback output, not microphone permissions or a quality/speed guarantee.
