Usage and troubleshooting

Find the process listening on a Windows VPN local port

For a client reporting a local listening-port conflict, identify the PID and owning process.

Checking steps

  1. Note the port in the client error. Run netstat -ano in Command Prompt and find rows whose local address ends in that port and whose state is LISTENING.
  2. Record the PID in the rightmost column and find it in Task Manager Details. Check the process name and path and whether a second instance of the same client is running.

Act on the results

If it is your duplicate client, close the extra instance normally from its menu and retry. For unknown owners or system services, give support the error, port and PID.
